If you facing WOW Classic crashing issue with blue/black screen, WoW classic crashing to desktop, or the game freezes on the start-up screen, please ensure that your PC meets the minimum system requirement to play WoW classic. follow the steps mentioned below to fix crashing issue with WoW Classic game:

Step 1: Update Graphics Card Driver

  • Nvidia users, use GeForce Experience to update your graphics card, select Express installation.
  • AMD Users can update the graphics card using this link.

Step 2: Update Windows

Pressing Windows + I key on the keyboard to open Windows 10 Settings, click on Update & Security, and then click on Check for updates to update Windows 10.

Windows 7 users can install Windows 7 sp1 platform update. Windows 7 Users use this link to update.

Install DirectX

Step 3: Close All Background Apps

Multiple Apps Running in the background can conflict with the game, please all apps running in the background.

  • Open Windows 10 setting by pressing Windows + I key on the keyboard, then click on Privacy and then scroll down and select Background apps and disable all the apps.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on the keyboard to open task manager, go to the Startup tab and make right-click on each program and click on Disable. 
  • Restart your PC and launch WoW Classic

Overlay programs such as Airfoil, EVGA Precision, Mumble, Taksi, NZXT CAM, Dxtory, MSI Afterburner, RadeonPro, XFire, Discord, etc. can cause WoW Classic crashing and black screen. To stop this from happening either disable these programs or uninstall it before playing the games.

Step 4: Repair the Game WoW Classic Game Files

  • Launch Blizzard Battle.net desktop application.
  • Click on the WoW Classic game icon.
  • Click on  below the WoW Classic game icon and click on Scan and Repair.
  • Hit Begin Scan.
  • Let the repair to complete and then launch the game.

Step 5: Avoid Overclocking

Set the hardware components on your PC to factory default settings to overcome crashing because of overclocking.

Step 6: Set Power Management Settings to High Performance

  1. Open Run box by pressing Windows+R on the keyboard.
  2. In the Run box type in powercfg.cpl and hit Enter.
  3. Go to Show additional plans and expand it and select High performance.
  4. If you do not find High performance plan, then click on Create a Power Plan option on the left panel.
  5. Put a check on High performance, create a name for a plan, and hit Next
  6. Set Turn off display and Sleep option to Never from drop-down option and click on Create.

Step 7: Disable Antivirus Program

While playing WoW Classic disable the antivirus software as it may block some game files and result in crash or errors, you can also allow the game to Antivirus and firewall.

Step 8: Reset WoW Classic Settings

You can reset the WoW classic settings via Blizzard Battle.net App: Go to Options > Game Settings > Reset In-Game Options button under World of Warcraft Classic.

Step 9: Switch DirectX

If you are playing WoW Classic with DirectX 12 settings then try to switch to DirectX 11. In case, WoW Classic is set to DirectX 11, then try to switch to DirectX 11 Legacy. World of Warcraft Classic Menu > System > Advanced > Graphics API

Step 10: Run WoW Classic in Windowed Mode

  • Click the Blizzard icon on the Blizzard app
  • Select Settings from the dropdown menu
  • Select Game Settings
  • Check the Additional command line arguments box under World of Warcraft
  • Type -Windowed in the box and click Done
  • Restart the game

Step 11: Uninstall and Reinstall WoW Classic

If none of the steps help you to fix the issue, it may be the corrupt game files, to fix this try to uninstall and reinstall the game.

Fix WOW Classic Crashing for AMD Users

  • Launch Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and choose the WoW tab
  • Click on Options and choose the Game Settings from the dropdown menu
  • Go to the game settings, go to the option Additional command-line arguments and activate it.
  • Now Type in -windowed and launch the game.

Mouse Cursor Disappears While Playing WoW Classic

Disable all startup programs as mentioned in Step 3 above.

Disable Overlay features as mentioned in Step 3 above.

Reset the WoW Classic User Interface

  1. Close World of Warcraft Classic game.
  2. Uninstall any addon managers to ensure they are not re-added to the removed addons.
  3. In the Blizzard Battle.net desktop application, Hit Options, select Show in Explorer (Windows) or Reveal in Finder (Mac).
  4. Go to the World of Warcraft folder.
  5. Select the folder for the game version _retail_ or _classic_
  6. Rename the Cache, Interface, and WTF folders to CacheOld, InterfaceOld, and WTFOld respectively.
  7. Launch World of Warcraft Classic.
  • Update Graphics Driver
  • Disable all startup programs as mentioned in Step 3 above.
  • Disable Overlay features as mentioned in Step 3 above.

Fix World of Warcraft Classic (WoW) Connection and Lagging Issue

Allow WoW game in Windows firewall, disable your antivirus program while playing WoW Classic.

Run Flush DNS, Release/Renew command:

  • Type cmd in Windows search box, make a right-click on command prompt and click on Run as administrator.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns in the command prompt window and hit Enter
  • Type ipconfig /release in the command prompt window and hit Enter.
  • Now type in ipconfig /renew in the command prompt windows and hit Enter.
  • Close the command prompt windows and launch the game.
