Finally, Red Dead Redemption 2 released on PC which was great news for PC players but it came with many unexpected issues. Issues such as multiple crashes, persistent mouse cursor while playing the game, stuttering, launcher issue of Red Dead Redemption 2- all these issues made things difficult and PC gamers were slightly disappointed. However, Rockstar made all possible efforts to keep their players happy and released a patch that kind of fixed many issues with RDR2 but few still remain. In this post, we will try some troubleshooting steps to Fix Red Dead Redemption 2 Crashing, Freezing, Mouse Cursor Issue & Stuttering.

Fix Crashing & Freezing with Red Dead Redemption 2

Error “Red Dead Redemption 2 exited unexpectedly” is a very common error that PC players are facing. Follow these steps not only to fix the launcher crash but to fix any type of crash with the RDR2 game.

Step 1: Update the Game Launcher

  • Exit out of Rockstar Game Launcher.
  • Close RDR2 and any Rockstar Game which is running.
  • Make sure to check in the task manager if the game or launcher is not running in the background.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Launch Rockstar game launcher and let any updates of Rockstar Games Launcher to update.

Step 2: Update Graphics Driver to the Latest Version

Nvidia and AMD company keeps releasing a new update to fix many issues with the game. Hence updating the game with the latest update may fix many issues with the RDR2 game.

Step 3: Get Rid of Rockstar Games Launcher Current Profile Details

  • Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
  • Select Settings.
  • Go to the Account information.
  • Click on Delete Local Profile and confirm the changes.
  • Now launch the Rockstar Games launcher.
  • Log in to your Social Club account and launch RDR2.

Step 4: Add Exception to Your Antivirus or Disable Antivirus

Make sure to add an exception for RDR2 in your antivirus settings and add the game to the whitelist. In case the issue still persists disable the antivirus while playing RDR2, you can enable the antivirus later on. Many players were able to play the game successfully after disabling the antivirus.

Step 5: Turn Off Two Cores on Quad-Core CPUs

  • Many players were able to fix crashing, freezing and stuttering issue with RDR2 game by turning off two cores on quad-core CPUs.
  • Start RDR2 and open task manager
  • Go to the Details tab, make a right-click on the RDR2.exe
  • Now select Set Affinity from the pop-up, uncheck two CPU cores and apply the changes.

Step 6: Run the game as an administrator and Disable Fullscreen Optimizations

  • Go to the game installation path.
  • Make a right-click on RDR2.exe.
  • Click on Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab, check both the boxes which say ‘Run this Program as an Administrator’ and ‘Disable Fullscreen Optimizations’.
  • Hit Ok.

Step 7: Update the System BIOS

Visit your system manufacturer’s website and update the latest BIOS available, many players have fixed multiple issues with RDR2 game after updating the system to the latest BIOS version.

Step 8: Disable Overclocking

Make sure you are not overclocking GPU or any other hardware component, disable MSI Afterburner or any other apps running in the background while playing RDR2.

Step 9: Perform Graphics Performance Tuning in Red Dead Redemption 2

Try tweaking with the advanced settings till you find the combination which is best, also try running the Graphics Benchmark found under Settings > Graphics > Run Benchmark Test till you are satisfied with FPS and performance.

For best performance try to adjust the following settings:

  • Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)
  • Reflection Quality
  • Water Quality
  • Volumetric Quality
  • Near Volumetric Resolution

Then try to adjust the following settings:

  • Temporal Anti-Aliasing
  • Texture Quality
  • Lighting Quality
  • Shadow Quality
  • Screen Space Ambient Occlusion
  • Anisotropic Filtering
  • Far Shadow Quality
  • Tessellation Quality
  • Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing (FXAA)
  • Volumetric Lighting Quality
  • Triple Buffering
  • Global Illumination Quality
  • Particle Quality
  • Mirror Quality
  • Far Volumetric Resolution

Fix Continuous Display of Mouse Cursor Issue in Red Dead Redemption 2

If the mouse cursor displays continuously while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 then try the following steps:

Turn on the Constrain Mouse Pointer setting

  • Go to the Settings > Graphics Settings > Enable Constrain Mouse Pointer.
  • Exit out of the Settings.
  • Relaunch the RDR2.

Turn on mouse trails in Windows

  • Exit out of RDR2.
  • Launch Windows 10 Settings, press Windows + I to open settings.
  • Click on Devices.
  • Click on Mouse from the left side of the screen.
  • Click on Additional Mouse Options from the right side of the screen.
  • Go to the Pointer Options Tab and check Display Pointer Trails.
  • Hit Apply.
  • Launch RDR2.

Verify or Repair the RDR2 Game Files

Open Rockstar Games Launcher.

  • Go to the Settings.
  • Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 present in My installed games.
  • Click on Verify Integrity present in Verify game file integrity.
  • Once verification is done, launch RDR2.

Epic Games Launcher Users:

  • Go to the game library.
  • Click on the cog icon.
  • Hit Verify from the drop-down list.
  • Launch RDR2 once verification is done.

Update Graphics Card Driver

For Rockstar Games Launcher Users:

  • Launch Rockstar Games Launcher.
  • Go to the Settings.
  • Go to My installed Games and select RDR2.
  • Go down to the Launch arguments and get rid of any Launch argument available there.
  • Choose Games and Launch RDR2 again.

For Epic Games Launcher Users:

  • Open Epic Games Launcher.
  • Go to the Settings
  • Go down to RDR2.
  • Put a check in the box which says Additional Command Line Arguments.
  • Get rid of any Launch argument available there
  • Get back to the Main Menu and launch RDR2
